Glass Tiger

Glass Tiger, a rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, was formed in 1980 by Alan Frew (vocals), Sam Reid (keyboards), Al Connelly (guitar), Wayne Parker (bass), and Michael Hanson (drums). Originally called Tokyo, they secured a contract with EMI Music Canada after opening for Culture Club in 1984.

Their debut album, The Thin Red Line (1986), set records as Canada’s fastest-selling debut, going gold within weeks and earning four Platinum certifications in Canada and Gold in the U.S. It included hits like “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone)” and “Someday,” co-written with Bryan Adams’ collaborator Jim Vallance, with Adams featuring in the former.

The follow-up album, Diamond Sun (1988), achieved Double Platinum in Canada and included popular tracks like “Diamond Sun” and “I’m Still Searching.” Their third album, Simple Mission (1991), earned Platinum status and featured the duet “My Town” with Rod Stewart.

Glass Tiger won five Juno Awards between 1986 and 1987 and received a Grammy nomination in 1987. Chris McNeill joined as drummer in 1988, solidifying the group’s lineup for years of extensive touring.

In 2005, the band released a 20th-anniversary DVD, No Turning Back, featuring live performances, new songs, and footage from their tours with Tina Turner and The Chieftains. They also appeared on NBC’s Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, performing their hit “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone).” A live album, GT Live, followed in 2006.

Glass Tiger remains active, performing over 50 shows annually. In 2008, Alan Frew published The Action Sandwich, reflecting on life as a touring musician. In 2009, the band visited Canadian troops in Afghanistan, continuing their legacy of connection with fans and communities.
